Meat quest is my quest to try as many different kinds of meat as possible in my life.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
During our time in Africa with the hunting we were able to do, we tried quite a few kinds of unusual meats. Towards the end of our time, Jake and I got to discussing it and counted up the number. It was surprisingly many considering that the vast majority of meat anyone eats is either chicken, cow, or pig (only three!) <br />
By now, it's a passion for Dad, jake and myself.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
But Meat Quest is really about far more than eating meat. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As I spent more time in Africa and came to love it more, I looked back and saw so many opportunities that I had passed up because I was perhaps too prejudiced or scared. For example, in India, we were riding along and passed a man riding his elephant to work. As we passed he shouted and asked if we wanted to ride it. At the time I was feeling very sick and extremely out of place. By the time our driver had translated we were slightly past anyway; I said no. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I've never ridden an elephant. Now, turning that offer down would be unthinkable to me.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So it's not <i>just </i>about meat; it's about living life fully, seeing and tasting as much of this beautiful world as you can (whether you like it at the time or not)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYZq7ENOTA4Ikj3gjLo10hWphJpd3KtJi9beR_UwDEcKTQauaX_M8ndMZhGs-pNBDy4m3bx0IZvXOOU36Ec7Ewgg8LhFpl8fltavbI7uS4bT2vBV09pqEUuz8qknAI1d5Dodyxyp-kW2g/s1600/Luke+and+Carey.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYZq7ENOTA4Ikj3gjLo10hWphJpd3KtJi9beR_UwDEcKTQauaX_M8ndMZhGs-pNBDy4m3bx0IZvXOOU36Ec7Ewgg8LhFpl8fltavbI7uS4bT2vBV09pqEUuz8qknAI1d5Dodyxyp-kW2g/s640/Luke+and+Carey.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Beef Mishkaki is the African version of Shish Kabobs. This is my favourite Tanzanian dish. I've had them at different places, so I found a recipe and modified it for authenticity and my personal taste.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Diced beef</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
1 small onion</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
3 Tb cooking oil</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
1 Tb lemon juice</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
3 Tb salt</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
1 Tb pepper</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
1 tsp masala</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
1 tsp ginger</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
1Tb thyme</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
1/3 cup sugar</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
3 Tb paprika</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
2 Tb garlic</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
1 Tb ketchup or tomato sauce</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
1 cup milk or cream</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Dash chili or cayenne pepper</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b>Directions:</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Dice onion and brown in oil. Mix onion and oil with other ingredients to make a marinade for the beef. Place in container and marinade for a minimum of one hour (overnight in the fridge is fine). <b>Tip</b>: <i>for your meat to turn out tender and even, set container out and allow meat to near room temperature before grilling. </i>Prepare your wood fire for grilling; this recipe won't taste right without smoke. Remove beef from marinade and skewer. Grill over hot coals and you're done! <b>Tip: </b><i>vary the fire depending on the cut. Better beef=shorter time + hotter coals, cooking them like a steak. A tougher cut = low and slow.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Perfect for your home made pit grill.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
(these are not kabobs, they are brugers. Just sayin') </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9SnvXaODbXJkdFCsDWqb-e9YMbm5EuG_pn3O5SWZZjfvtFdd8LOmjIiBSX3IiSpdoOWAFwlnaq6PLF2vUhq9vgS69Ng3BgA487Zm_A8Q_3qn4qdbxBNvyQ_WD4yXN9IEci01JSfbhs7A/s1600/Burgers.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9SnvXaODbXJkdFCsDWqb-e9YMbm5EuG_pn3O5SWZZjfvtFdd8LOmjIiBSX3IiSpdoOWAFwlnaq6PLF2vUhq9vgS69Ng3BgA487Zm_A8Q_3qn4qdbxBNvyQ_WD4yXN9IEci01JSfbhs7A/s640/Burgers.JPG" width="640" /></a><i><br /></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
If it turns out right you'll get a smoky, beefy kabob with hints of the fresh lemon and ginger coming through.</div>
</div>

(Part 1 refresher)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://all-things-manly.blogspot.com/2011/12/hippo-hunting-part-one.html">http://all-things-manly.blogspot.com/2011/12/hippo-hunting-part-one.html</a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
After the hunt we made our way home with large pieces of meat in out large coolers. I spent most of a day with Jake and Linz helping to cut the meat and bag it for freezing and eating. As far as percentage, we probably didn't bring home even half a hippo, but we were eating on it from September to April IIRC!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIeKNYcTuMRHgsG6XzxYownzkkGIZr2sw7FM58oxGFlFD-S-GPPRgxKh5M5ELX7zKB8YqH8Oj__0SUgLH4b5-0un1hJ6kEHUCvV80iUbJqAZi0Bk7m7JyPVlEwR2qXmFNPlIOp3CF9fDs/s1600/IMG_0319+copy+(960x1280).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIeKNYcTuMRHgsG6XzxYownzkkGIZr2sw7FM58oxGFlFD-S-GPPRgxKh5M5ELX7zKB8YqH8Oj__0SUgLH4b5-0un1hJ6kEHUCvV80iUbJqAZi0Bk7m7JyPVlEwR2qXmFNPlIOp3CF9fDs/s400/IMG_0319+copy+(960x1280).jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
That's most of only <i>one </i>back-strap!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The meat is very good and tastes mostly like pork, but you can detect a unique flavour of its own. I even dry-rubbed one and make a big "pulled pork" in our smoker.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b>Now for the interesting part...</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Hippo hide is incredibly thick.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So thick in fact, that it makes them look fat. They're not.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMwemhw2qcQvHPxA68eN6mItNdiBVs8_p-HDcBxK0pyrfgTCcbLZBEezGmvsn78-7NG1zO3Pk4EPQ7MNyBwmltNubhUGSNHVn4uFsXOl5iepPvODA-_QHg2NhWIGOohgdMz49lHTMO_4I/s1600/103_1225+(1280x960).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMwemhw2qcQvHPxA68eN6mItNdiBVs8_p-HDcBxK0pyrfgTCcbLZBEezGmvsn78-7NG1zO3Pk4EPQ7MNyBwmltNubhUGSNHVn4uFsXOl5iepPvODA-_QHg2NhWIGOohgdMz49lHTMO_4I/s640/103_1225+(1280x960).jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Look closely at the slab my hand is holding. You can see the dark outer skin and down where my fingertips are, meat. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
No fat. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The thick white layer? </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It's skin; all skin.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjf8iUw546-2u5HG3-iIcY_AgTW7XLX4wPsQiJpjSFLDHtqnk_pcSPHgB_iNTEjPSPGLaVmFX2_QRKiaxcvoixOu1AkuCsMOdteZNt9Y769Y501OgLaUgESC74clB2E-HCuxbvmtc1M4bo/s1600/103_1205+(768x1024).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjf8iUw546-2u5HG3-iIcY_AgTW7XLX4wPsQiJpjSFLDHtqnk_pcSPHgB_iNTEjPSPGLaVmFX2_QRKiaxcvoixOu1AkuCsMOdteZNt9Y769Y501OgLaUgESC74clB2E-HCuxbvmtc1M4bo/s640/103_1205+(768x1024).jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It's so thick that it won't even bend all the way over (you can see on the left that they're pushing it down)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Now, you may still be wondering what a <i>Sjambok</i> is. It's a semi-flexible rod/whip made of dried hippo hide that's been used in Africa for many, many years. They're truly unique because they are stiff like a Massai cattle prod. They're also flexible when swung hard; acting like a western whip. They're great for killing snakes.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
An interesting part is they way they cut tissue. According to what I've read they will leave an outright cut like a razor blade, but, the cut has crushed edges reminiscent of a blunt force wound. I could cut finger sized twigs off a tree with mine. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Unfortunately they have a bit of a stigma since they wee used by South African police with horrendous results.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>How it's made....</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We brought a big, sheet-like section home and washed it. Then I cut it into thick strips like obese snakes. These were pierced on each end and hung from rafters in a shed. We put bricks on the bottom end to keep them straight as they dried. Hippo skin has natural oil which preserves it even in raw form. ll you have to worry about is proper drying to avoid rot.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzso6y09L6c3JhadRnwKM8elF6uRr1x-Qi58Ao214uzUVyZtCL7S1rdPRCAOuhKAsuJgNHft2yZWKsv-pE2_6csmZiifDz8PY3OQxnsXNakYjTIN4DYH-EFFGAifWz6uMWPHgC0uGo9ZA/s1600/DSCF7605+(768x1024).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzso6y09L6c3JhadRnwKM8elF6uRr1x-Qi58Ao214uzUVyZtCL7S1rdPRCAOuhKAsuJgNHft2yZWKsv-pE2_6csmZiifDz8PY3OQxnsXNakYjTIN4DYH-EFFGAifWz6uMWPHgC0uGo9ZA/s640/DSCF7605+(768x1024).jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The sheet made about twenty; here are four hanging.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After drying for several weeks, I picked one, cut it down, and got to cutting. I removed the scaly outer skin and cut it semi round. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I had read that to make them tough and round, that they were rolled for hours between heavy steel plates. I decided that there was no way that every bushman and Voortrekker carried steel plates around though. So I got the thinking about how steel is processed; now steel is often formed by rolling it between plates. But in older days....Bingo! Hammer and anvil.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Dad had 20 lb sledge hammer that I used for my anvil and a heavy hammer for beating. I spent hours and hours and hours and hours beating on it getting it round. It turned out really great. It made you see how wicked the things really are.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
To give you an idea of how much time I spent beating the thing, I was getting fitted for a suit months later and the lady asked if I had broken my left shoulder when I was little, since it was so much bigger than my right!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here's the finished product</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSzwRJZodGooQM_Gv-JDCkT2uo0UBiMVCiPHArUxI9-2qi7Ziokhrwg7hA2HGCUlql0EKAGCRU2LSIlerPv2LL3031k6FqitNNSZyhYvL5jBNcsjjCKp2PRuwhiKcXS8oyaN4XQwvo5uc/s1600/431475_3289600355399_684946719_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSzwRJZodGooQM_Gv-JDCkT2uo0UBiMVCiPHArUxI9-2qi7Ziokhrwg7hA2HGCUlql0EKAGCRU2LSIlerPv2LL3031k6FqitNNSZyhYvL5jBNcsjjCKp2PRuwhiKcXS8oyaN4XQwvo5uc/s640/431475_3289600355399_684946719_n.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

It has been a very long time since my last post; very long indeed since the bootmaking prequel. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
But I've been delaying because I was holding out hope that I would get the pictures. Sadly, in the course of moving and the pics being on someone else's camera, they were lost. Forever. And since I had to leave the boots themselves in Africa there's nothing at all to show you lovely people. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Manly tears.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
To continue with the process though, after sewing all the pieces together I put grommets in for laces and sewed the uppers to the soles. I think the soul sewing was my favourite part of the project. It was interesting seeing how the shape changed as they were sewn to another different shape.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
By this time we were getting very close to the move so I hadn't the time to sew the tyres on myself. Dad and I went to town one day near the bus stop where they cut up tyres to make sandals. We picked which tread we wanted and then the Fundi traced the shoes and cut the rubber. We left them with him for a few days while he sewed them together with a very heavy duty needle (imagine sewing through a heavy SUV tyre). He did a good job and the shoes were done.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
They looked something like this</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtv9Zxmees-hwgDYaOruMu3jgHvswGPoDinmD_TEQROYyuEO0HK9kV8QH_9_lzQs0VpEGnh9ID02ZgAT03A6krpo7JrjrFVVlDEsla4Gk-CKdp66joR2Jqxzynkel96hMf1XDjacoqr_Q/s1600/newpotatoes.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="224" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtv9Zxmees-hwgDYaOruMu3jgHvswGPoDinmD_TEQROYyuEO0HK9kV8QH_9_lzQs0VpEGnh9ID02ZgAT03A6krpo7JrjrFVVlDEsla4Gk-CKdp66joR2Jqxzynkel96hMf1XDjacoqr_Q/s320/newpotatoes.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Seriously though, I was pretty pleased with how they turned out. I wore them for about four hours one evening; there were a few spots that needed broken in, but they would have been quite comfortable with oil and wear I think. The two main mistakes were (1) the toe profile looked weird, and (2) the sides (that the laces bring together) were a bit far apart. I think they would have worn in though.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So there you have it. Believe me; I'm more disappointed about the pictures than you are. We can all be sad together</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

They lied!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">"Well, you know", you are informed by your local misinformed know-it-all, "when you swim, your motion increases the pressure on the watch by 27 megawattipixels times the squre root of the water depth."</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Step 3:you find <a href="http://forums.watchuseek.com/f281/water-resistance-myth-vs-reality-239664.html">this</a> post in a watch forum finally revealing the truth which is approximately as follows:</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Watches are pressure tested to the rating which they're given, BUT that doesn't mean that a specific model is tested progressively deeper to determine it's limits:</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">"Thats right people! the rating on the watch is merely a market descision and not an actual fact of the capacity of the watch in question."</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Now for the other part, called "Dynamic Pressure". In the actual post which I've linked above, the forummer gave the actual math and showed that the "moving increases pressure like crazy" idea is complete hogwash. it's a very informing post, if you should care to read it.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">So what does it all boil down to? </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">It means that if you're extremely concerned about your watch's warranty you should follow the chart on Wikipedia. </div><div style="text-align: center;">However, if you're like me and you want to how it will realistically perform, then pretty much just follow the number on your watch. Maybe it could even go far deeper, but that's up to how much you're comfortable risking it. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Really though, it means that if you buy a 100m watch, you can use for anything that you or I will be doing.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Ta da!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">P.S. Hot water and/or salt water will eat at the seals more quickly, eventually causing susceptibility to water.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">P.P.S. We went on a hunting trip (we didn't have the greatest luck), the ladies went on a visit to the States (we ate alot of hot dogs that month, not that I don't like to cook but -->), I got malaria for the first time, and we went hippo cropping (which is what this post is actually about).</div><div style="text-align: center;"><div></div><div><br /></div></div><div style="text-align: center;">First off, let me explain the difference between hunting and cropping. Hunting is trying to kill an animal while placing bounds on your ability to get them. Daylight only shooting, fair chase ethics and so on are all part of that. The point is being ethical, following the laws, and giving the animal a chance to win. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><div></div><div><br /></div></div><div style="text-align: center;">Cropping has, of course, some things in common; you still try to see to it that none of the animals suffer etc, however, normal hunting laws do not apply to cropping. Cropping is eliminating animals because there are too many or they're causing problems, and it's only by authorized personnel. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><div></div><div><br /></div></div><div style="text-align: center;">The game office allowed us to help them reduce the numbers of a pod of hippos in an area near a fishing village near a lake. According the village headman, two people have been killed there this year alone. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">So off we went..</div><div style="text-align: center;"><div></div><div><br /></div></div><div style="text-align: center;">We met up with the game officers and drove a few</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"> hours to village. We met with people in the village, got a boat motor from the police station and went to the area. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">It was late morning by this point and we loaded up into a boat and went to look for them.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguMYVCQ1bDi6mtXsS-zTcZZqzWE-S8Q6rqTqutGm8Un4-JT7tQZVLJodpu1fHjsIMwjnutPuafEZS65TjFg5ttsrwUJz5KbOO39ogM-AadH5fT-7L2DA0gOnv3ER_B89tT58wulSQAufo/s200/103_1147+%2528800x600%2529.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5692307150091135426" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); text-decoration: underline; display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px; " /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">We found them quickly and decided to get off the boat and shoot from land. Dad set up on a little bipod and we tried to look for the biggest one as their heads poked above the water. Dad chose his target and made what looked to be a good shot.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj09HS7KCxk65l2D1-3pXK5gkMi6iGw-D_WAGylQ8GRoGMQI6vT-mfvbWa3VPtm8y-qLWpZ6-CFFqvgd0-AlgfkbOuda3yrcwacqBkWmhS3oLw0lfbKR8KREsJzD9dxeMr7gOprddvsCeY/s200/103_1154+%2528800x600%2529.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5692311062254548514" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px; " /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">The unusual thing about hippo hunting is that (1) you will rarely see them on land. Off course we would have preferred to get them out of water but it's usually not possible. And (2) you must shoot them in the brain, which is a small target. once you've shot them though, they disappear under water; whether you missed or not. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">A few minutes after the shot we moved down the river a couple hundred yards to where most of them were. I was next in line and after choosing I shot and the hippo disappeared </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">The third interesting thing about hippo hunting is how they are retrieved. After shooting, you must wait from 15 minutes to several hours for the gasses in their stomach to expand. They then float to the surface, you hook onto a leg tow them to shore, them onto land.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">So after shooting we went back to the village and ate lunch. Then we went back and founds Dad's floating and started to work on it (you can't field dress a hippo, you cut it up where it is).</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">They're a chore to move.</div><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDeFYuvc2Jckbp-cPfc4vzD-V6Lsrqj7yUDCO5qrwKV3yS8E34MnT9JyXQN4HqBSTkj8fk7b8n_4E7Ybc6gqCPI5T48s5akxrT2eRtYZUw8HZ88PUQb0nJXc6lZROpOx57w2Cfkjf3S-U/s200/103_1187+%2528800x600%2529.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5692312110499873570" style="text-align: center; display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px; " /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">After a while we found mine too, which was a relief after spending two or three hours wondering if I missed.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"> </div><div style="text-align: center;"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0zpZe-925aewHNLjn-1_YiBofZ_aqotrO-P8ZcSW1KRrj78k5h_EeGne4warITJ38ib_8zqrpkc_uqGIJ8yCPbcpT1tlWivi0i_4CX8NgaKaPP0kuGR2NWdFnBytMYj1CbzVBX2lGi9g/s200/103_1219+%2528800x600%2529.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5692313130984404642" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px; " /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">It takes a crew of about ten men a couple hours at least to get them cut up. As the light faded some took trips back in the boat bringing meat and people back and forth. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">It was after dark when I went back on the last boatload. </div><div style="text-align: center;">(drifting almost into a group of hippo after dark when the engine stalls is pretty fun)</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Much later we went to sleep in the town courthouse on our sleeping bags.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJDCj0r1Go6Kk5AvpYWqg4gNFViR8EkBQ7IGU7hadi3wgv4CwVnh7B964k46QwOfe6i-FY3654SqYSkpsg4lukYWrOxnHRXcATYUbetP-Rn_nDol4UYQRW4TXOYguC55yscFloO8IoWpg/s200/103_1226+%2528800x600%2529.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5692314867718736866" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px; " /></div><div style="text-align: center;">To be continued....</div>Lukehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08498446161620382540noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7309505345804005438.post-49018628844018417672011-10-23T08:46:00.000-07:002011-12-31T06:40:55.822-08:00A Song for the Day<div style="text-align: center;">Hello!</div><div style="text-align: center;">I was just listening to this song, so I thought I would post it. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/xajQUEPXRyg" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Usually, my ideal about music is that there should be a small group; un-amplified and without any effects other than the music coming from their instruments (I still haven't decided whether a quartet or a quintet is the perfect number though). My ideal about recording is that the mixers' goals should be to replicate that ideal as accurately yet as flatteringly as possible.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Yet the Beatles are the complete opposite of that ideal and they're great. Their music is full of multi-tracking, special effects, and just about everything. In fact, they're later work often borders on<span class="Apple-style-span"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 19px;"> <i>musique concrete.</i></span></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Really, the reason I think they are an exception is that they were privileged to be in a special time. The technology to do those effects was new and experimental. It also had the advantage of not being digital. If you read about the reasons and the methods they used to make their music, the difference between them and the strange, computer-washed pop music of today is immediately apparent. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Eleanor Rigby is mostly by Paul McCartney with the brilliant string arrangement by George Martin ("the fifth Beatle"). </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">I think it's an amazingly well-arranged song, and one of the best recording/mixing jobs ever. But then I decided to design them a little more fitted and such (maybe complicating the design was a mistake though :D )</div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;">Here's my desk covered in leather stuff</div><div style="text-align: center;"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_fQZlpWE78LvNBnvcWKtDpJxItf8HMMMIFLwJIZIf8cSDydJzeSuWzGG-zs50wPmK7U67U0npZRfALpdCVZ4y0wCDybZvm5-OlxCVKpxNc5k7VnyMNXBBrLtm8FDFedttLIF06GKuXAc/s400/111008-200910+%2528640x480%2529+%25282%2529.jpg" style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5661181687792655554" /><div style="text-align: center; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><br /></span></div><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">So, the first problem was making a shoe last, the from around which the shoe is built. I could hardly order form a shoemakers' supply and carving wooden lasts would have been a huge task for me. I did some research and found a lady who makes lasts for making felt costume boots. What you do is (1)put on socks (2) wrap your socked foot in duct tape (3) cut duct tape sock off your foot (4) tape up the cut (5) and stuff it with plastic Walmart bags. It work surprisingly well!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">After making my lasts I traced my feet and cut the initial soles out of thick leather</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Here is a picture of the lasts with a pair of socks over them and the soles tacked onto the bottom</div><div style="text-align: center;"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhR9pAg_yA4GUA-HMQxnyG2UcO6qh4x_8SYRE72wffhaQLfMZ9y0AVZetw4E5YO_vlYpGwpWfOBhjakr-tN-makv1ckkpMVB8M9g3Vt4g3cOhnl07e4Jp8UBVyWUjcMSr9_PB-zWGRR8fE/s400/111008-201015+%2528640x480%2529.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5661182038084445458" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px; " /><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">After I had tacked on the leather soles I had to pattern for the leather pieces. This was rather long and difficult and was easily my least favorite part so far. But I finally got that done and I cut the pieces for the leather uppers out of medium/thin leather. So now I'm slowly sewing all the pieces together. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Here's a picture of one's progress (it will look alot less strange when it's formed correctly, I hope). Despite appearances in the picture, they will actually be only just above the ankle.</div><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6MQksKsqFLnF4u7I4H5CPmFrQf73m9D0SjQSDsjI-HLX9hUWJngASVKcsPdYZGyvNVOFtcgzY71nDj8uOi7EREbo-zj_ZgM2j1bPgaXvBhd-dBkCuUcpih06NxCSCtXow7X_OdMV7UHQ/s400/111008-201118+%2528640x480%2529.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5661182728383779458" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 378px; height: 400px; " /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">What remains now is to finish sewing the pieces together, sew the uppers to the leather sole, wax the seams, install grommets for the shoelaces, and sew on a piece of tyre tread for the rubber soles </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Ha, reading over this it sounds so easy compared to how it is!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">So there you have it so far. :D</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">-Luke</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div>Lukehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08498446161620382540noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7309505345804005438.post-66729378513508419542011-10-08T08:15:00.000-07:002011-10-08T08:22:15.080-07:00Running Shoooz<div style="text-align: center;">Greetings Y'all ( <---that's the correct spelling)</div><div style="text-align: center;">I'm going to try and post the shoe post later, but till then here's a quick note about running. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Unfortunately, I haven't been able to run for far too long; several factors lead to me being benched since the beginning of the year from shin trouble. But I can't wait to start again. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Linz told me about this giveaway for a pair of running shoes. I was going to post it a while back but had sizing issues.</div><div style="text-align: center;">This comic is from <a href="http://buttersafe.com/">Butersafe</a>, the usually funny and clean web comic (it's almost always clean, but there might be a few old ones that aren't if you go through them all).</div><br /><a href="http://buttersafe.com/comics/2009-06-11-LumberjackJim.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 527px; height: 3188px;" src="http://buttersafe.com/comics/2009-06-11-LumberjackJim.jpg" border="0" alt="" /></a><div style="text-align: center;">Lumberjack Jim knows exactly what the perfect day is.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">I haven't been working on the shoe project for a couple of weeks due to busy-ness, but I'll <i>try </i>to do a post about the project thus far by the end of the week.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">-Luke</div>Lukehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08498446161620382540noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7309505345804005438.post-68282471796851174012011-09-05T11:01:00.000-07:002011-09-05T11:14:29.529-07:00Ketchup... er uh, Catch up<div style="text-align: center;">Hello everybody, It's been quite a while since the last post with a lot happening here. First of all, I'm done with school! Oh huzzah! What a relief. </div><div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Second of some, we went on a trip to Malawi which went very well; dad taught evangelism classes for two weeks, the ladies did a ladies' day, and we young people did a young peoples' day. </div><div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Post to which you can probably look forward are mostly projects I'm working on:</div><div style="text-align: center;">A heavy canvas backpack (which mom did much of the work on since I don't know how to use her sewing machine, at least I cut it out)</div><div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">and</div><div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Boots!</div><div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">I'm currently working on the boots as much as I can. One thing you re-realize every time you make something is that it will always take twice as much work and leather as you at first thought. I'll try to describe to process and post pictures sometime soon. </div><div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">The idea with the boots is to make light, hot weather desert boots. Somewhat of a mix between <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Clarks-Originals-Mens-Desert-Boot/dp/B0007MCUTK">this</a>, and <a href="http://www.forwardforward.com/fwd/DisplayProduct.jsp?d=M&s=B&c=Grenson&product=GREN-MZ6">this</a>, with a touch of <a href="http://www.whitesboots.com/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=30664">this</a>. </div><div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Well, that's it for now.</div><div style="text-align: center;">

Which is very nice; Thanks! You should click on the link up there and check out her blog (you can open it in a new tab, you don't have to leave yet), she has some good thoughts there.</div><div style="text-align: center;">As part of this I have copied and pasted the following section:</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: Georgia, Utopia, 'Palatino Linotype', Palatino, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px; "><div align="center" style="text-align: center;margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; "><span style="font-size: large; ">The rules after receiving this award are as follows:</span></div><div align="center" style="text-align: center;margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; ">-Thank the person who gave it to you and link back to their blog.</div><div align="center" style="text-align: center;margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; ">-Pass it along to other deserving bloggers. </div><div align="center" style="text-align: center;margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; ">-Reveal seven things about yourself. </div><div align="center" style="text-align: center;margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; "><br /></div><div align="center" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; "><br /></div></span><div style="text-align: center;">So here are seven things about me:</div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">1. I'm a lefty. There's nothing particularly special about that, but I'm glad I am.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">2. I love music. It's my biggest hobby, although I don't really like calling it a hobby because in my mind that implies frivolity to some degree. I think of music of as a serious part of my life which I will always try learn learn more about. I particularly like small bands (e.g. five or fewer) with everyone pushing their instrument to the limits.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">3. I love leather. It's recognized as one of the best ten smells on earth by the Dos Banditos. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">4. I love well designed and built things; anything really, from boots to vehicles, quality shows that someone had pride in their work and they cared about doing what they do.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">5. Red meat. Need I say more?</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">6. Some things on my "bucket list": Climb a mountain (like Kilimanjaro) and Skydive.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">7. I like trying to make people laugh. And I like <i>good </i>humor; I think humor is like any "art"; it should be able to stand on its own, without having to reply on hype or anything like that.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">So, on to passing it on. I really don't read very many blogs but here are some of them.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://purposelyathome.blogspot.com/2011/06/to-everyones-surprise-d.html">http://purposelyathome.blogspot.com</a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://yoghibear.blogspot.com/">http://yoghibear.blogspot.com/</a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://alifeofjoy.blogspot.com/">http://alifeofjoy.blogspot.com/</a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://lurlynncrochet.blogspot.com/">http://lurlynncrochet.blogspot.com/</a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://agladheartproverbs1513.blogspot.com/">http://agladheartproverbs1513.blogspot.com/</a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">So there ya' go. I'm sorry I don't know of any good blogs by guys.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span">Part Two:Browsers</span></div><div style="text-align: center;">(Don't be offended, it's for your best interest)</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">It's come to my attention through my little stats here on Blogger that some of you are using Internet Explorer. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Stop that.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Why? Selous<div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Well, the big bore shooting post is postponed until further notice when I get the videos, so sorry if you were looking forward to that. But I though I should do a post before the new school week when I will be too busy to post again.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">I thought I'd post this short anecdote from the life of Frederick Courteney Selous. Selous (Seh-loo) was a British explorer/hunter famous for his exploits in Africa and is generally a huge figure for lovers of Africana. He explored remote regions, scouted and served during wartime, and basically killed hundreds of animals. Although he is hardly a good role model for conservation (not by a long shot), to be fair there were few people at the time that saw the need. He was, however, a very rugged individual who lived an amazing life.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Anyway, on to the story. I've been pretty busy with school, but on the bright side, the semester is already one-third completed.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">So, the first order of business; catch up on this blog.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">To cure the ham I used <a href="http://www.ehow.com/how_4557176_cure-ham.html">this</a> recipe .It was a very small ham so it only needed to cure for around five weeks. We didn't have any curing salt though, so I just used sea salt.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Here it is.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgg0auDYAIzWOEN6IS0ScEWNfRbn3fJGG-zYwVPedCUNZgG2Sn22ehVsQULCSLOkNd3Oo9dDl__3eJIfzRnaXn15O6KzUqqDBozE4x7CrjPp_mB3cgWfl1Bk2-7HdrYkwEV1m4JoM7jOIo/s320/DSCF6884+%2528800x600%2529.jpg" style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5613332993922185730" /></div><div style="text-align: center;">I decided not to smoke it after all, so Mom cooked it in a very traditional ham-like way</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">It even tasted like ham</div><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEie7BG9VB0Ce_BM09csh2CF3JMjnUP5K3P0FM9HneAvXpQEU55f59jkEdwYbACAtmIxOKKNo2IaXMW1htZLIgQTRMTn00mauEVIfrKwCfoKs7pKYPMaPkwILeXZXzWrBpRLeYdVsYJWW4A/s320/DSCF6885+%2528800x600%2529.jpg" style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5613332332300950290" /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">I think my favorite thing I've smoked so far was the pulled pork because it's harder to do, and it actually got that real smoked flavor. If you want to see the "barbecue" I made, here's a <a href="http://alifeofjoy.blogspot.com/2011/05/little-improvisation.html">link</a> to a blog Mom did.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">I also redid the deisgn a little bit as I'm sure you've noticed. I'll be doing a little more when I get a chance. Let me know what you think. And remember to also send in suggestions/requests.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Hopefully, the next post will be on shooting big bore rifles (such as .416, .458, and .500)!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">-Luke</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div>Lukehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08498446161620382540noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7309505345804005438.post-34284622746454937142011-05-12T11:09:00.000-07:002011-05-13T13:43:01.124-07:00Filler Post!<div style="text-align: center;">It's just been school for me the last few days. But over the last while I've been smoking some meat. Today I did a dry rubbed pork loin. It turned out great. I'll do a more complete blog on preparing meat when I smoke my ham in about a week. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">In the meantime, this is a video that I saw after someone posted a link to it on a big bore hunting forum. I think it's hilarious; look closely at the shooter's reactions!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><iframe width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/swEGlMsjJzs" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Also, for your music of the day here's "Take Five". It's really groovy. Even if you're not really into the jazz type of thing try to listen to it some; it can really open your ears to sounds in other genres.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><iframe width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/faJE92phKzI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">And now the Finale. If you take something very genuine like this <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gK0iMLvCfFM">bluegrass</a> and combine something far out like this <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2kotK9FNEYU">modern jazz </a>you get <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lw5275SmPu0">this</a>.</div>Lukehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08498446161620382540noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7309505345804005438.post-44945912562286126062011-05-05T10:00:00.000-07:002011-05-05T10:31:51.933-07:00Hey Hey Hey What's Happenin'?<div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Hello Everybody</div><div style="text-align: center;">This is going to be something I've never done before; just a general update blog.</div><div style="text-align: center;">So, I'm sorry if you wanted a post on whether to wear cowboy boots or tennis shoes (That's a no-brainer at least)</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">I guess it was last week, I went up to Arusha with the other guys to wrap up some things from before we moved. Because of bad roads we went the long way around which traverses a good bit of Tanzania. So a very long trip. Then furi</div><div style="text-align: center;">ously running around Arusha for a few days. On the way back we decided to try the other way, which is shorter but the road is far worse. It was very beautiful, it was like crossing the whole country through the bush. But, the road was really very bad. I don't mind much, but those kinds of roads are bad for the car, so we probably won't go that way again.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Now, we're back and the new semester has started. I'm taking four classes this semester. The very good news is that (at least for a while) it's my last one. At the end of it I'll have my A.A. </div><div style="text-align: center;">degree. Hooray!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">In other news, I'm really missing my old guitar. Here's a picture of it before I sold it. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdw1Xb4WqpIxwYtnJHZ0tzkdk3t_2bxtmKNXecWdzor997kQuSlhSjVcURDmnXWDuA2q2RNSvBq4NuIUEXKAzH692hagKfWXbZl8pv4a0ZqzKrj97464wicGtBDIgdAybMBVkVwxaZbfg/s320/electricguitar.jpg" style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5603282691326529650" /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Isn't it pretty?</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">I really loved it, but I couldn't play very much because of low voltage for the amp and such things as that.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">The problem is playing an acoustic like an electric will tear your hands up cause of the heavier strings. So, for now my fingers are sore :D</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">I'm hoping to update the general blog design before too long, but I'm not very bloggy, so it may be a while.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Oh, I've been practicing Blackberry Blossom (You can look at the original post about it <a href="http://all-things-manly.blogspot.com/2011/02/blackberry-blossom.html">here</a>), so I was thinking about posting a video, but after watching it I most definitely decided not to. Some things sound better while you're playing it. Oh well.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">We butchered a pig recently, and since ham isn't available here I'm trying my hand at curing one. I'm planning on smoking it when it's ready so I'll do a post then.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Until then, here's a good YouTube to watch;<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3EPib5LWFo">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3EPib5LWFo</a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">-Luke</div><div><br /></div>Lukehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08498446161620382540noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7309505345804005438.post-64107782392622386212011-04-21T11:17:00.000-07:002011-04-21T11:42:02.364-07:00Noam Pikelny: My Favorite Banjo Player?<div style="text-align: center;">My apologies to bluegrass nuts, but since I believe many of my readership are not quite as "into" Bluegrass as I am this post concerns; The evolution of the banjo.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">There are, of course, very old styles such as <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8uOy3WdT3mY">clawhammer</a>, but we're talking more about picking rather than strumming. In the the early 1940's, Earl Scruggs invented his style of playing banjo. His amazing style seemed to come fully realized out of nowhere, and became <i>the </i>way to play banjo. <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0pWnZFrdQFE">This</a> is a video of Scruggs.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">The huge setback to Scruggs' style is that if you actually listen, Scruggs' players can't actually play the melody they want. They have to hint around at it (listen to all the notes in the previous video). So, the next step came around the early/mid 60's thanks to Bill Keith. He invented a very complex difficult style that allowed banjo players to play any sequence of notes they want to. Go <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Something-Auld-Newgrass-Borrowed-Bluegrass/dp/B000005YVE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1303409653&sr=8-1">here</a> and listen to the clip of Rickett's Hornpipe. Completely the opposite of Scruggs, it's <i>only </i>melody.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">So where does it end up today?</div><div style="text-align: center;">people like Noam Pikelny play a fusion which allows them to play the melody and still sound cool and smooth.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><iframe title="YouTube video player" width="640" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/kg4Y3EIQ17M" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Listen to his break starting at 40 seconds. It's a perfect mix. :D</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">A problem with banjo is that it's strength is in sending out a barrage of powerful notes. This led to it being in excluded in some of the groovier musical circles such as Tony Rice and David Grisman (Grisman left out the banjo because there was more room for the music to "breath" without it). So the challenge today is to have a style that is versatile enough so that it will work in situations like the David Grisman Quintet (<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUC1RK9fHf4&feature=related">here</a> is an instance of it working amazingly)</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Is Noam Pikelny the new hope? </div><div style="text-align: center;">Maybe so. </div><div style="text-align: center;">Stylistically, he may be my favorite banjo player </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">-Luke</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div>Lukehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08498446161620382540noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7309505345804005438.post-17029081490513483262011-04-09T22:52:00.000-07:002011-04-10T04:10:52.095-07:00Silly Questions - Starring You!<div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span">I shall do my best to answer some of these strange questions in turn.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span">Jack: What a strange question. This post isn't actually about April Fools Day at all, so..April Fool! What it is about is gaiters. According to Wikipedia "Gaiters are garments worn over the shoe and lower pant leg. Most gaiters especially in America are longer (for maybe hiking in snow). But as snow is scarce but thorns and stickers are numerous in East Africa, a different tradition has developed. A typical "safari" gaiter can be seen <a href="http://www.long-grass.com/products/detail/canvas_ankle_gaiters/">here</a>. They can be worn with modestly long shorts or long pants; either is useful. While I don't myself, many hunters in Africa wear shorts, ankle height boots and canvas gaiters. Pack boots that American hunters would use are unnecessary and impracticable. Generally, you need cool and flexible gear for "desert" conditions. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">More for making them than anything, I decided to try and make a pair out of some heavy duty canvas we have. As I thought more about me sewing I thought less about me sewing, and My amazing <a href="http://alifeofjoy.blogspot.com/">Mother</a> was kind enough to sew them for me. After they were made, I used some of Dad's Driza-Bone oilskin mixture to make them waterproof. To make canvas into oilskin all you have to do is melt the oil/wax mixture into the fabric. I used a blow dryer.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Here they are. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4La7ACMCs5d6CGRsO3VSFluTKJM3IRunatDIT8gMRjvFdiXunfyxO6s1rcGAOS7Sw9zB-yNUS80k3mDHwNsH_KyaSdxbk6qlHv3hNr0y_4JWwzDb-w-qlRbVXHuexQfZdqcWLJGEKtGw/s320/DSCF6841+%25281024x768%2529.jpg" style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5590651675853003554" /><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">And also here.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSqwMtXQwFPauK5pM7fcDubipCwcwt3loX1TWm9kHJjSEYayoyctAdJ3WpzEF6BoEhHVSRuyb7iHStmY7IJPaGEli6tiihrh0dBGkfwogeRdvag16Zl2b4kCLSobptRbslKeSNZl1PW3s/s320/DSCF6844+%25281024x768%2529.jpg" style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5590651683792167634" /></div><div style="text-align: center;">I think they're smashing and I'm chuffed that Mom took the time to help me.</div><div style="text-align: center;">In other news, I changed my guitar strings yesterday - There's nothing like new strings :D</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">-Luke</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div>Lukehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08498446161620382540noreply@blogger.com6
